On this blog I'll keep track of my reading with my seventeen-month-old son, Sam. I figure writing about children's books as an adult is a slightly odd thing to do, since I'm not the intended audience. Still, having just started reading kids' books again, I think they're pretty interesting to think about. And who knows, if I keep this up long enough, maybe Sam can start getting his two cents worth in from time to time.

Good idea for a blog/ discussion. Actually, I don't know that kids' book aren't for adults, or more specifically, parents. The books enter the family either through the parent reading to the child, or with the child, and/or sharing the book. I have read / interacted with books with my children since they were very young. Even now, I still read to my youngest, who is 11 and a very skilled and perceptive reader. There is a different experience for us reading / discovering the book together. In this, I think that, though she is the main audience, I am part of the intended audience.

Thanks for your comment, Gary. Clearly this blog is worth keeping, as you're response has added some important nuance to my new thinking about children's lit. Of course children's books--at least those for the very young--are almost always read with an adult (though frequently lately Sam has been interrupting my readings of his books and sitting a bit away from me to read the book by himself). That's key for me to attend to.

I guess what I had in the back of my mind is some trouble I've had with books that seem to want to entertain or appeal to the adult separately, or ones that seem to treat children as mere adjuncts of the adult world. Initially, I thought Knuffle Bunny (do you know it?) did the latter.

Ahem, interrupting our readings. I think that's better and, honestly, more accurate.

I don't know Knuffle Bunny, though I am aware of its existence. I'll have to do research.

I know what you mean about books that seem to separate the reading experience of the adult and the child, whether by making sly nods to the adult or by making the book have little purchase with an adult (even an adult reading in symbiosis with a child.) That experience of reading symbiotically, of reading through each other's eyes is something very valuable about reading with children. It is akin to making up stories with children. You enter each other's world, and engage each other imaginatively.
